Ancient Robots and Other Inventions

Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,

Robots in the ancient world?

Well, it’s not as shocking as it might sound at first.

Of course, according to Homer, the Greek god Hephaestus was aided by his automatons; robot-like servants which helped him in his work.

Moreover, the ancient Greeks believed that history was cyclical. So, strange as it may sound, they actually thought that civilizations which existed before them were more technologically advanced than themselves.

It’s an idea which looms large, for example, in Plato’s telling of the Ring of Gyges story.

So maybe it’s fitting that now they are an ancient civilization themselves, we should be surprised to find out how technologically advanced they really were…

Read on below to discover five ancient inventions that are surprisingly modern, plus the rest of the week’s resources.
