Weekend Round Up

Aphrodite's Origins, Cicero's 6 Mistakes of Men, Historians Magazine and the history of Ancient Music.

Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,

Outside our window the winds howl with a howl that would frighten the gods. We are out on the Pampas, with a nary a mound or forest to divert the speeding air. Like the Bora that blows in the Adriatic or the Etesian in the Aegean, these winds also have a name: the Pampero.

A strong squall that occurs in Argentina and Uruguay between October and January, the Pampero brings a considerable drop in temperature.

And just like that it went from 28 Celsius (82 F) to 2 degrees (35 F).

Guess I didn’t need to pack my swimsuit after all.

But that’s okay, we have a strong house that can withstand the force, great literature to indulge in, and excellent company to pass the hours.

So I’ll leave you, dear reader, with some reading to catch up on, just in case you missed it during the week. We delved into Cicero, both his lost work, Consolation, and his attributed “Six Mistakes of Man”; we have the story of Aphrodite’s birth, as well as the surprising results to last week’s mailbag question: BC/AD or BCE/CE?

For our Members, we released two exciting resources this week: a fascinating webinar and performance on ancient instruments and hellenistic music, as well as our Classical Wisdom Litterae Magazine, dedicated to Historians.
